What to expect from coaching
Coaching here is a calm, practical conversation with someone who has spent over 20 years leading people, including technical teams, at Apple, Slack, and Salesforce. Remote, 50 minutes at a time, and you set the agenda.

Plainly put
What coaching is, and what it is not
Coaching is
- A thinking partnership: you set the agenda and I ask the questions
- Practical, with small next steps you choose
- Honest, with kind challenge when you need it
- Confidential, with a few plain exceptions (see the FAQ)
Coaching is not
- Therapy or mental health treatment
- Someone telling you what to do with your life
- A promise of a job, a promotion, or any particular result
- Legal, financial, or medical advice
A plain note: Career clarity is career guidance and decision support. It is not therapy or mental health treatment. If you are finding things hard, please talk to your GP or another health professional.
Questions
Common questions
What happens in an Intro chat?
An Intro chat is a 25-minute video call, at no cost and with no pressure. You tell me where you are and what you would like help with. I ask a few questions, and we work out whether career coaching, career clarity, or leadership coaching suits you, and whether coaching is a good idea at all.
If it is not the right fit, I will say so. You decide whether to book anything after that.
What does a 50-minute session look like?
We start by settling in and agreeing what you would like from the session. Most of the time is a conversation: I ask questions, reflect back what I hear, offer a framework or a view when it helps, and push back kindly when a story needs testing.
We finish by agreeing one or two small next steps, in your own words, so you know what you are taking away.
How often do we meet?
A common rhythm is every two to four weeks, which leaves time to try things between sessions. Some people book a single session, some choose a three-session package, and some prefer Ongoing support for a steadier rhythm. We settle on what suits you in the Intro chat.
Is it remote?
Yes. Sessions are online video calls, so you can join from anywhere in Australia. The link is in your booking confirmation. A quiet spot, a stable connection, and headphones are all you need.
What does it cost?
The Intro chat is 25 minutes at no cost. A 50-minute session is A$129 AUD (inc. GST). A three-session package is A$349 AUD (inc. GST). Ongoing support is A$349 AUD per month. Prices are shown in Australian dollars.
Is what I say confidential?
In plain words: what you share stays between us. I do not pass on your name, your employer, or what you tell me, and I do not name clients in public.
There are two usual exceptions: if I were worried that you or someone else was at serious risk of harm, or if the law required me to share something. Please do not share confidential material belonging to your employer. Coaching works without it.
The same goes if you use an AI tool to prepare. Leave out anything confidential and anything that identifies other people.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Life happens. You can reschedule or cancel from the link in your booking confirmation, and please give as much notice as you can. If something unexpected comes up, email hello@humbleleaders.co and we will sort it out fairly.
What should I bring?
Just a rough idea of what is on your mind. If you like, bring anything you would find useful to look at together, such as a job ad, your LinkedIn profile, or a decision you are weighing. Our Prepare for your first session page has a short checklist, and you can skip all of it if you are short on time.
Should I talk to an AI or to a person?
Both can help. An AI assistant is a handy sounding board for ideas, lists of options, and rehearsing what you might say. A person can hear what is behind the question, notice what you do not say, push back kindly, and keep you accountable. Bring your AI-assisted notes to an Intro chat and we will start from there. Read more in Why a person as well as AI.
Is career clarity therapy?
No. Career clarity is career guidance and decision support: setting a direction and mapping your options. It is not therapy or mental health treatment. If you are finding things hard, please talk to your GP or another health professional. In an emergency call 000, and for support at any hour you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Who will I be working with?
Alan Pooley. I have spent over 20 years leading people, including technical teams, at Apple, Slack, and Salesforce. Coaching here draws on that experience. You can read more on the About page.
Ready to start with a conversation?
Book an Intro chat, or have a look at the checklist first. Both are fine.
